After coming off a successful #1 Billboard celebration for Christ Rappers with Lecrae, the Christian,Gospel label CitySide Records has launched it's 2nd playlist radio station. 1st on Rdio SEE/LISTEN HERE: http://rd.io/x/Rl7iHBgv5zDy/
Then the 2nd on Spotify just minutes ago. SEE/LISTEN HERE: https://play.spotify.com/user/stacyweaver/playlist/1AzeGTvaduPdnRBfNKC035
In the wake of every music video and streaming site running to the punch to see who can be the best service and have the lowest price that can still pay the major label's artist and indie artist CitySide Records,CitySide Music Ministries Co-founder was led to a different solution.......Don't ask for a subscription fee, let the major streaming service do that and just promote a created playlist with your label's/ministry's roster. and so WCSE - Christian Rap Radio was born. Not to mention in just 2 days. On Rdio with just a small 2200 spins of the label's music the label states that their focus is partnering up with the sites that pay the best to their artist and label and it currently has chose Rdio and now Spotify..but whyyyy?
Just this past week Taylor Swift pulled her album 1989 from Spotify and others have followed so we asked the co-Founder why go this route and also why Spotify?
He told us that many indie artist don't know the music game at all and just are focused on getting radio play and streams in hopes listeners will go buy their songs. He also told us that in the last 2 to 3 years major's have focused on streaming as music sales have declined enormously and that indie labels need to focus too with the fact that their ducks better be in a row.
ducks were and said that many writers are not registered with ASCAP, BMI or SESAC and they also need to make sure they have a Publisher and administrator with doing so to ensure their songs are getting to the main streaming sites that matter. Streaming sites like Pandora, Spotify, Rhapsody and Itunes Radio pay both the Writer and the Publisher along with streaming sales as if they were record song sales. So that's 3 times the artist and label get paid from 1 play and many artist and indie labels have no idea of it.
So instead of focusing on sales the ministry focuses now on physical sales online and offline and streaming. Makes sense, just build your listening audience to your playlist (and that's if your catalog is big) and get traffic coming to the station. We prredict if WCSE gets 1,000,000 plays the parties would split $6000.00 but with the fuzzy math of the streaming companies and looking at Taylor Swift's royalty report, it shows they would split somewhere in the ball park of $164 to $400. Now we see why Taylor Swift pulled her songs. Unlike YouTube who do not give fuzzy math they stick to a rate of 0.002 cents per play w/o change. And that's right we said change. In a statement of a undisclosed artist both Spotify and Pandora's royalty rate of 0.002 cents decreases after the plays increase. Hope ASCAP and the other PRO's shove it to the streaming services because it's gonna take WCSE a billion plays in order to even get $500,000.00.
We'll WCSE ya better get to campaigning like the Republicans did against the Democrats and look at votes like plays so they can win this battle. But at least the labels are getting something , there are many stations that don't pay anything. So lets touch and agree that prayer is one of the best remedies for the indies right now until change comes.
